The sensitivity of skin and how much sebum it produces will determine a person’s skin type. You can find your skin type by observing how it looks and feels after washing with a gentle face wash.
Take the 30min skin type test
One easy method for determining your skin type is the 30-minute skin test. To perform this test, thoroughly wash your face, removing any previous products. After washing, wait 30 minutes. During this time, refrain from applying any other products to your skin. After the 30 minutes are up, examine your skin in the mirror.
Upon examination, you can determine your skin type based on the characteristics you see. For example, consider the following characteristics:
A Normal Dry Combination skin is skin that has both Normal skin characteristics as well as dry and/or sensitive patches. Use a dual approach by treating the normal skin
areas with products formulated for normal skin while targeting the dry and/or sensitive patches with products formulated to treat dry and sensitive skin.
A Normal / Oily Combination skin is skin that has both normal skin characteristics as well as an oily T-Zone. Use a dual approach by treating the normal skin areas with products formulated for normal skin while targeting the oily zone with products formulated to treat oily skin.
Dry skin can be uncomfortable and potentially even embarrassing. If you have dry skin, your skin produces less sebum than it needs and is unfortunately often a lifelong struggle for many. However, with the right daily treatment, hydration and moisturising, dry skin can be normalised and its characteristics eliminated.
Characteristics of dry skin include:
Normal skin is used to describe skin that is not noticeably oily, dry, or sensitive. This skin type produces enough sebum to keep the skin evenly hydrated without becoming greasy. People with normal skin have even complexions with few blemishes.
Oily skin can appear at any age and is often genetic. Oily skin is also often the result of your skin reacting to a lack of moisture by producing more sebum than what it needs. Contrary to popular belief daily moisturizing of oily skin with the correct moisturizer is essential to the control of sebum production. When you have oily skin, your skin is prone to accumulating layers of dead skin which makes exfoliation an important part of your treatment plan.
Characteristics of oily skin include:
Unlike other skin types, sensitive skin is not determined by how much sebum a person’s skin produces. People with dry or oily skin can also have sensitive skin, though it is most often associated with dryness. In some cases, sensitivity is related to skin conditions, such as eczema or rosacea.
Sensitive skin may feel painful or tight and is commonly associated with redness and inflammation as well as other signs of irritation. Products, water, and environmental factors easily irritate sensitive skin and cause a reaction.
